MIKA NINAGAWA7 November – 20 December 2008
Opening November 6 2008, 17-20 We are pleased to present Mika Ninagawa’s first exhibition in Denmark: mika ninagawa. The exhibition consists of seven photographs that play with the meeting of dream and reality. With strong colours and either a blurry or an over sharp focusing a dream-like universe is created in Ninagawas photographical work, that takes a starting point in poetical everyday situations. The seven pieces are taken from different series from the artist’s production. Liquid Dreams represents swimming fish that with their orange bodies and movements are in sharp contrast to the deep blue stillness of the water. Everlasting Flowers shows a series of photographs of artificial flowers. With their almost psychedelic colours they form an unreal beauty while her photos of figures look like dark shadows that move lightly across the blue background. Mika Ninagawa (b.1972, Tokyo) is educated in 1997 from Tama Art University, Tokyo. Since then she has exhibited in most of the world, among other places at Colette in Paris and in The Kennedy Center in Wasington DC. She is represented by Tomio Koyama Gallery in Tokyo and in addition she has had exhibitions at several important museums in Tokyo such as Yokohama Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art and at Ueno Royal Museum. Ninagawa won a number of prizes for her work, at latest the Ohara Museum of Art award. Simultanious with the exhibition at Helene Nyborg Contemporary Mika Ninagawa opened solo exhibitions at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery and Beijing Art Now Gallery.
